St George’s Academy Council is the forum for our Student Voice on both the Sleaford and Ruskington campus Year 7-13. The main body, the Academy Council holds meetings on a fortnightly basis in the Chairman of the Governor’s meeting room at the Sleaford campus. The Council invites three representatives from Years 7 through to the 6th Form at Sleaford, the Chairperson of the 6th Form Council, Year Council mentors, and two representatives from the Ruskington campus to attend.
Meetings are jointly chaired by Katie Vickery and Lyndsey Denton-Fray (Year 12) and the minutes are taken by Rhianne Pritchard Year 13. Our treasurer is Maddy Holden. Minutes are distributed to all form tutors, the Senior Management Team and Council reps, with a copy also uploaded to the Academy website and put on the Academy Council noticeboard. The Head Boy, Jack Holyoak, Head Girl, Beth Murray and their deputies, also play roles on the council and collectively guide its work with co-ordination by Vice Principal Mrs J. Steward.
Each Year Council consists of twenty democratically elected representatives, of which three then take the topics discussed to the next Academy Council meeting. Any news or decisions are then conveyed back to their next Year Council meeting. Requests that require Senior Management approval are taken by the Chairperson to the Principal in a meeting once every term.
The Academy Council contributes to the consultation process of all major decisions on the future of the Academy, recently being involved in shaping the look of the designs for the new buildings and making critical decisions on mentoring schemes within the Sixth Form. The Chair also writes regular contributions to the Academy newsletter. It is the aim for the academic year 2014/15 to become an even more effective Student Voice system by: setting up our own environmental council; maintaining a prominent feature within the community with our charity work and Youth Council links; encouraging our students to voice their opinions within our Student News programme; and looking towards what our school needs to be undertaking in order to achieve the Gold Award for School Councils from the Lincolnshire County Council Healthy Schools Initiative, whilst maintaining the existing successful aspects, including student involvement in new staff interviews and playing a direct role in Teaching and Learning discussions with Vice Principal Mr T. Crawshaw.
