Students get together to improve reading skills
Over the last few years we have been running a Reading Intervention Group, which places Year 7 and 10 students together in the Library twice a week to enhance their literacy skills. The scheme encourages students to read together, building confidence, as well as create new friendships through a love of reading. As part of the experiment, a growth report is created and it has shown that every Year 7 child has improved their reading age, with the biggest leap being 2 whole years. Students have been very enthusiastic to the programme, and they made the following comments:
Rosa from Year 10 said, “I think helping Year 7s has helped with my people skills” and Brooke said, “ I have enjoyed contributing to Year 7 students’ learning.”
Henry from Year 7 said, “My reading age has gone up two whole years... My mum is really proud of me.”
In order to celebrate all the hard work put in though out an eventful year, the students were all treated to a joint pizza party.
